Have you ever thought about how important street lights are in the Philippines? Light is used in various ways, and good quality street lighting is always needed, whether it’s to illuminate the surroundings or to ensure that everyone is safe, especially at night.
Malabon City Mayor Lenlen Oreta continuously improved the Malabon Street Lighting project to upgrade the city's street lights to LED lights as an eco-friendly and cost-efficient alternative, as well as to guarantee the safety of all Malabonians.
“The Malabon Street Lighting Project was programmed as an upgrade of the technology available to change the Meralco lights to LED lights, which is expected to decrease the cost of power consumption,” says Engr. Christian Uriarte of the Malabon City Engineering Department.
Considering LED street lights is a smart and effective way to brighten the city as this technology is designed to be environmentally beneficial due to their low energy consumption and affordable maintenance expenses.
Mayor Oreta continued this lighting street project up to this day, as well as making this project one of his top development goals for this year. This Malabon Street Lighting project is a response to the request from barangay officials, groups like homeowners associations, and other people's organizations to properly secure the most heavily used pedestrians, small streets, and alleys during the wee hours.
“We started the month of March by inaugurating our newly-installed street lights in Hasa-Hasa and Marteniko Streets, Tanigue, Kitang Alley and Gen. Borromeo Streets in Brgy. Longos, and Sampaloc Street in Brgy. Panghulo,” says Mayor Lenlen Oreta.
As of December 2021, the City Government of Malabon has installed a total of 6,268 LED streetlights through the help of the City Engineering Department (CED) and it garnered serveral positive impacts including giving the city a vibrant feel, guaranteeing safety for road users, and most importantly, serving as a deterrent to crime.
“We will continue these kinds of projects to ensure the safety of every Malabonian and to maintain order here in Malabon City,” he concluded.
